What is leadership?
Leadership is the way of facilitating transformation through others. It’s the role, actions, orientation & style of leading to achieve an outcome. Whereas management is about directing tasks & more short-term tactics, leadership focuses on longer term goals & development of strategy & people. It requires a wider viewpoint & skill-set & an agility to adapt & constantly change perspective from the tactical to the strategic.
Our programmes equip leaders to succeed. Schools of excellence are realising more that emotionally based skills are often the missing link to success. As technology advances & rates of change increase it’s also clear that understanding & working with change is critical. People skills are vital to facilitate these. Our leadership programmes are based on essential people skills, helping you & your teams;
- Develop purpose through values, beliefs & goal-setting skills
- Work to strengths using two powerful EQ assessments for overall & relationship EQ
- Build on development areas turning around limiting beliefs & lower EQ areas
- Motivate self & others using motivational & behaviour change techniques; NLP, CBT, positive psychology
- Empower relationships & communication skills
- Adapt to change using The 6 Pillars model of resilience & growth
It’s no coincidence that the London Business School defines leadership based on similar 5 Pillars;
- Defining purpose
- Leveraging strengths
- Influencing people
- Empowering others
- Enabling change
We show you the bigger picture, how these elements work together in one inter-related holistic model of achievement called Emotional Intelligence. We’ve been designing EQ programmes that test, measure & develop EQ skills since 2006.
Emotionally Intelligent Leadership programmes
How EQ Leadership works
Leadership is about mobilising resources, in particular people, to achieve great things. Being intelligent with emotions is key to making this work.
- We specialise in emotionally intelligent self-leadership. It naturally builds success by orienting us towards what’s most important to us & aligns us to our natural style of leading.
- Emotional Intelligence skills correlate to high performance & success. Unlike personality tests & IQ which don’t correlate to these or compose of buildable skills & competencies.
- EQ assessments show us what skills to develop & help monitor development. So why would you choose a leadership programme that’s not based on buildable skills & correlated to performance & success?
Our approach is unique. We assess you & your team’s EQ. By understanding how you work individually & as a team you’ll know your level of leadership & what good looks like. We show you your team’s emotional intelligence graphically – how team members work together. This is profound. Suddenly building performance & better relationships becomes much clearer. These are life-changing programmes structured around agreed performance criteria & where the benefits become self-evident.
How we work best with you
Our programmes are for everyone of all orientations, backgrounds & experience. The more senior or relationship-oriented the roles are, the more impact the programme can have. We’re based in London in the UK but facilitate programmes world-wide & mainly in English*.
Commitment & curiosity are important qualities for all participants of a successful programme. Most important is senior leadership buy-in & participant self-selection. We’ll show tried & tested ways to build powerful programmes, though it’s you & your people’s commitment that makes the magic happen.
Of course we’ve had our fair share of sceptics converted to EQ’s power, though that’s not our aim. It works best if most participants have a modicum of engagement before the programme starts. The great news is we’re adept at helping this happen.
Whether it’s pre-programme using engagement surveys & discussions, pre-programme marketing emails, case studies or during the programme using; motivational talks, skills-based sessions, confidential one-to-one briefings. These can all significantly help build consensus & commitment. Ask us how they’d work for you.
Programme length & timings
Programmes depend on what you want to achieve. Global dominance? This might take a few sessions. Typically, we need at least a month or so for organising & planning a programme & agree resources. For instance, programmes using EQ assessments require a few weeks to build engagement, schedule testing, a few to take assessments, score & analyse & a few more for coaching feedback. We align our programmes to your expectations & needs & explain how the process works every step of the way so it works optimally for you & your stakeholders.
The basis for all our discussions, agreement, testing, analysis, recommendations, coaching & training are 100% confidential between participants & EQworks unless otherwise agreed beforehand. We’ll agree things such as information sharing, so expectations are set & trust is built.
* We can test & facilitate Emotional Intelligence programmes in other languages. Just ask.
Making it stick
To gain the most from programmes we focus on gaining commitment & engagement from all participants. Our programmes & guides are comprehensive & we strongly encourage daily practice of key techniques. Combining training modules with EQ testing & coaching is the ultimate way to make significant changes you’ll feel & others will notice. We also use e-learning as quick reference refreshers & self-tests after courses.
We tailor in-house masterclasses & coaching programmes that combine skills training with EQ testing & coaching. We bring out the skills that matter most for particular roles, people & their teams. Using EQ psychometric tests we reveal often complex team dynamics & where their needs lie as well as monitor their improvement.
Pre-reading, questionnaires & testing can be used to help participants consider their areas of interest & to evaluate their wellbeing & alignment for programmes.
Global leadership challenges
Knowing what matters
Leadership development does not take place in a vacuum. The biggest leadership challenges of the planet affect us all; Our organisational leaders need to be plugged in to these to understand, pre-empt & manage them well for long-term sustainability. So leaders need to see the big picture. This is the highest form of leadership we want to bring out in our clients through applying EQ principles.
For instance, the wealth of the world has doubled in the past 25 years (according to GDP World Bank figures) yet are we more healthy or happy? It’s true we’re living longer but many issues negatively affecting wellbeing & fulfilment seem on the rise;
Obesity, violent crime, opioid addiction, environmental pollution, extinction of species. These serious leadership challenges require increased awareness of how all things affect & are connected to each other. This ‘bigger’ leadership requires greater compassion for each other. Without which mankind will continue to lack an agreed, long-term strategic plan that truly serves both us & the planet.
Organisations are under increased pressure to do more with less. The pace of change of technology challenges our need for control and to understand and adapt to change. Technology requires us to think bigger to ensure it serves our bigger goals. But it also puts emphasis on us understanding how to work best with it. At present smart phones & social media present a multitude of issues we simply do not have the emotional understanding of and we’re suffering as a result. For technology to be the slave & not the master to our bigger strategic goals, we need to understand & work with it better.
In the 2020’s people are still struggling to find & achieve the things that satisfy them most due to things like low self-regard, low self-awareness etc. This leads to low life & work satisfaction levels. Following on from this organisations struggle to find & retain the right people. Or they use benchmarks for competencies or success that fail to measure & deliver the performance required. These are low EQ culture or skills issues and give rise to;
Higher stress levels, feelings of inadequacy, chronic illness, staff-turnover, sickness-absence costs, siloed-working & lower satisfaction, productivity, employee engagement & collaboration. Developing your EQ is at the heart of understanding & remedying these very real day-to-day challenges that exist because of a failing to accept what people actually need to thrive.
Culturally human thinking has been too survival oriented & so short-term & short-sighted. That’s no way to build effective societies. Governments & organisations often feel incentivised for short-termism with a ‘get now-pay later’ ethos driven by short term goals, contracts, shareholder-market pressures etc. It’s important to recognise that such approaches are based in fear & a lack of trust. As a result, people spend too much of their energy trying to control, rather than engage & in ‘reactive’ mode, defending, hiding, excusing and then dealing with the failings associated with this short-termism. These are inefficient & fail to serve us in the long term.
EQworks offers solutions based on what works for long-term performance, well-being & effective cultures. We see human development & performance as going hand in hand. We encourage acknowledging & leveraging the power of our emotions & behaviours. We offer consultancy & support for new & existing programmes as well as ad-hoc support, one’s focussed on individuals, teams or organisations working as a whole.
How to build an EQ culture
We help people & their organisations understand their value to each other, build trust & work together more effectively. Positive cultures that use emotional intelligence programmes promote openness & sharing, joined-up thinking, self-management, taking of responsibility which maximise both success & wellbeing.
This is a strategic agenda as opposed to remaining one-step behind, always reacting or treating issues as they arise. Piece-meal approaches that pay lip-service will not reap the type of rewards & are easily spotted by employees or customers so can further undermine authenticity.
Effective cultures need to be both authentic & holistic to put the right conditions in place to both trust in, & plan for, a better future. There is no alternative for long-term success.
