EQ Versus IQ – What’s more important?

Emotions communicate our experiences, illuminate our awareness and help us interpret our world. Emotions enable us to recognise or make changes. They show us what’s most important.

That’s why tapping into emotional experiences helps us be our best, bring out our abilities and keeps us open to opportunities. Developing Emotional Intelligence moves us towards success and fulfilment, yet few people or organisations prioritise EQ development. This is a key blindspot for humanity as a whole.

Your intelligence quotient (IQ) does none of the things above. None of them.

IQ tests measure intellectual and reasoning abilities, which are quite different things to EQ. Although incredibly valuable, IQ on its own tells us nothing about our sensory information or what’s important to us. The thinking mind can’t operate productively in a vacuum without emotional input.

The evidence: IQ isn’t usually correlated to success or wellbeing.  To perform at our best, our intellectual and emotional functions need to work together. That’s why IQ testing has gradually been replaced by EQ testing as a far more realistic and empowered way to identify and build winning skills for life.
